I worked for a nonprofit for 5 years and eventually made my way to corporate. I was in an account management position for a Fortune 500 company, learned a lot, grew professionally in a way I never thought I could and gained a ton of valuable skills that are highly in demand and transferable.
I made the decision to go back into nonprofit after 2 years in corporate. Now that I have been in nonprofit as a Director, I honestly don’t know which is a better fit. I do love that the work that I am doing is serving a greater purpose other than to generate revenue, but I also miss the structure and high quality staff I worked with in corporate, there’s also processes and systems I miss that made it possible to be successful in my role.
I suggest taking the dive and learning from your experience. At least you can say you tried, and you either will love your decision or you won’t, and in that case, you can always go back!
I hope this helps :)
I was interviewing with a few places at the beginning of summer to make the move to corporate (because I had burned out doing way too much for too little). During that time two other nonprofits ended up reaching out to recruit me during that time, one that paid very well but had a ton of red flags and another that would only mean a slight salary bump but significantly better WLB and an incredible team. I ended up taking one, and I couldn’t be happier!
I also found some of the for-profits I was interviewing with seemed great while others seemed really intense (with one I felt like I was being grilled or that they thought I was misleading them in every interview, yet they kept advancing me to the next step - it was really weird!). What I’m trying to say is that whether you move to corporate or just change organizations, just take the time to find the place that will be a good fit for you!
This is great advice, thank you!
I'm trying to move now, haven't finished the schooling and barely began job search so far. Began this transition in march so it's just thoughts and 🙏 for a little longer now...
