I see automation more heavily in sales & operations planning, capacity planning and instock management.
Transportation planning and freight reconciliation already can be heavily automated.
Automation in distribution be it AS/RS and AGV along with other software and physical automation are increasing the level of automation in the distribution and fulfillment space.
Sure there are always exceptions but most Transportation Management Systems have long been able to automatically tender/manage freight for parcel, ltl and truckload . It also manages freight reconciliation.
For air we have similar capabilities that are moving towards parity with road.
Even coordinating logistics from first and middle mile to last mile is primarily automated. It’s “hands off the wheel” with generally limited touches.
I generally don’t have to manage much ocean freight or rail as its generally handled by freight forwarders (import/export shops)

But cycle counting might be a good candidate as Supply chains become supply networks with more decentralized warehouse systems.
There are quite a few processes which can be automated assuming accurate, timely data, along with trust in both the data and process. Optimization engines related to forecasting, manufacturing planning and transportation planning have been around for years, but users feel the need to adjust the results due to mistrust. Sadly, some of the lack of trust is a result of people fearful of losing their job.
Automation in the warehouse has been around for awhile, although improvements in robotic picking along with automated packing have really leaped forward recently.
Probably the biggest hurdle is the large capital cost combined with most companies being followers, not leaders when it comes to new technology.
S&OP through scheduling
