Yes. I’ve lived here 20 years and the last couple of years have been totally different than my first 15 in the city. Among my friend group we’ve all had instances lately where we are scared or people get aggressive with us in ways that never used to happen.
I think there’s been an uptick in outward rage/aggression since the pandemic. Not just among the homeless/mentally ill but in general.
What counts as a “disturbing and dangerous event?”
No. Manhattan. Financial district.
Is it worse than 2019? Yes.
In my experience, each year has gotten better since 2020. But still a lot more random acts of aggression than before.
During the 80s we never had those back to back aggressive attacks on the subway. The problem was a general decadence and misery of the city but people, homeless etc weren’t aggressive on 1 to 1 situations-Especially if you had a casual not provoking dressing code and look, you were safe in most cases. The gangs were a huge issue and you couldn’t cross the “ghettos” back them at all.
I mean there was the guy who got shot and killed in Crown Heights. Definitely good reminder unfortunately not to get involved if someone seems unhinged. So sad for his family.
Nobody is held accountable. Mental illness and drug abuse is rampant. Police are powerless. Actually ORDERED to not deal with drug addicts. People who have been through the revolving city door ten times for violent crimes are free to do it over and over until they kill somebody. I’ve been loving in Manhattan and then in suburbs for 34 years. It feels like the late seventies and 80’s to me. Riding the subway was an experience.
Literally got attacked on the train yesterday. Was the first time I’ve ever actually been hit and I provoke the guy at all. Stay safe out there folks.
That’s why I always have popcorn with me.
Nope, same as always—you never know what you’re going to get.
I've noticed quite a few who don't look like NYers. And they're more aggressive and belligerent like in SF.
Bro expected every homeless guy to have a tattered Yankee fitted and beat-up Timbs on 🤣
Do most of you feel that our mayor is to blame for the most part?
If you ignore decades of deinstitutionalization and the past however many administrations punting the issues of housing the homeless, then yeah I guess it’s all Adams’s fault.
