They can certainly ask and you can certainly say no. That said, know a friend who gave one months’ notice because of that situation.

The firm asked me to potentially stay another week so I can close out a matter. Said I wouldn’t be bothered about anything else. I billed 1 hour that week and was traveling.
Yikes! Agree with VP1. On my last day of. Y small firm I had the partner ask me if they could do anything to convince me to stay —there wasn’t. They always want to squeeze more work out of you since you’re already trained and know the cases. They’re going to replace you anyway so try to maintain your firm last day if that’s what you want to do. Good luck with your new opportunity!
