Here's the thing with networking groups, no matter if it's Highrise, ProVisors, TEAMs, TEN, All Cities, BNI, yadda, yadda, yadda:
95% of the people attending are sellers, not buyers. In other words, they're looking for people who are willing to buy their service, and they're not looking to buy someone else's.
What does that mean? Well, first, you have to discern whether buying their service now will result in future business for you (in theory, that's how these work, right?). If you're an M&A guy, will Bob's Plumbing hire you for anything, ever? Probably not. So if the group is a lot of people who are like Bob's Plumbing (small business, limited legal needs), then the group is not for you.
I work in business management, and there's a guy trying to get traction with an 'advisor' group. Thing is, it's a bunch of business managers all attending. Do I think that Dwayne Johnson's business manager is going to refer me a client? Uh, only one they have zero interest in, which means their a problem client, don't pay, or have a ton of issues (maybe, every now and then, they're too small). In other words, a client I wouldn't want either. So why should I join? Sure there are a ton of service providers looking for business from my clients, but I don't have any need for any of them right now, so I'm not spending $1K to join. But plenty of wanna-bes have joined (and are complaining they're not getting business. Duh).
So look at the group. Go to a meeting if they allow you (they'll give you the big sell, but usually they'll let you attend a meeting or two). See if its members dovetail with what you do, and decide.
And go in with eyes wide open. Don't think "well, I'll join and I'll get a ton of business. Because you won't. At least, not right away, and maybe not ever. Which means if you do decide to join, decide what your walk-away point is, too, and stick to it.
No problem.
