I did it a few years ago in NYC and actually found it to be a very rewarding experience. Bc it is a grand jury you can’t get out of it and they track it very well. You can get deferments but they find you. You also can’t act crazy and get out. Mine was 2 weeks (of super chill days), cases were really interesting, and then you don’t have jury responsibility for like 5-6 years. I learned a ton about prostitution, undercover cops, and internet fraud :)
Thank you. Any advice?
Nothing really. Follow the rules, try to block off work, don’t try to get out of it. I found it useful to write down the facts of the case then using my synthesis to explain it to the broader jury once the lawyers left. It was good to have a fact base - most people did not pay attention and needed to be reminded of what happened.
Grand jury is different than petit jury, the latter is what most people know. In NYC grand jury is four weeks of half days, you pick either all mornings or all afternoons. I got paid for mine by my company so it was no big deal. Worked late most evenings. Wasn’t traveling so could do it. Made a friend or two and got some amazing stories. Net, the 6 train is a cesspool of petty theft, especially for iPhones at 59th St.
