We have shot two documentary style spots in Tokyo for a global pharmaceutical campaign. Local crews are efficient and detailed. They even photographed all of contents of the equipment cases so they could put them back together exactly how they arrived. Docu work can be hard there, since the culture of saving face tends to limit how open real people are about issues in their lives for a camera, especially health issues. Have a producer who has worked there before, since they will do wonders bridging cultural communication gaps - especially the tradition of not wanting to say no directly to one’s employer. Tokyo is also a place where rules are taken seriously, so make sure your guy or gal gets all needed paperwork in place. We did not have language issues there, since so many people in Tokyo speak excellent English. Lastly, bring an appetite, since IMHO Tokyo is the best restaurant town in the World.
Locations can take longer to permit. Best to hire a service company like 21 City.
In my experience shooting in Japan, especially Tokyo is expensive and slow.
Asks are taken very literally, for example if you show a mood board with wardrobe examples you will get what is on the mood board with little to no options.
Be prepared for lots of process and be sure to have lots of discussion to be certain all is understood. Even those who do speak English well in Japan may misunderstand what you are saying and not ask a question for clarity. Good luck shooting in a shoestring as it is a very expensive city.
It’s expensive, hard to permit exterior locations, and the crews are a bit slow. I recommend 21st City as a local production company.
