Is anyone applying to in-house jobs and wondering how to find out salary range before investing too much time with interviews? I would like to avoid asking about salary up front but I don’t see any other way to find this information.

Usually this comes up in the first screener with HR.

Don’t worry, usually the first person to interview you, whether the internal recruiter or a member of the legal team will usually mention it in the first interview, sometimes right after they ask you to give them your basic background/elevator pitch. It’s super useful because you know pretty early if the salary is going to be so far below what you’d take that you yourself won’t want to waste your time and theirs or other times you’ll realize it’s in the ballpark of what you were seeking

I had a few screening interviews and every time I asked what was budgeted for the role they told me.

like

Yeah, sometimes they’ll give you a range, sometimes they say what they are purportedly targeting (though take that as an opening number)

Received an external offer. Negotiated 10% higher. They agreed, I verbally accepted, and they sent me written offer with a week to sign. I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

I'm a first yr attorney at an insurance firm and am in the process of interviewing for an in-house position at a tech company. The position is pretty much generalist, but I get the impression I'd be working mostly on SaaS and partnership transactions. I definitely think I would like the transactional work better, but I am concerned about the long-term earning potential vs. partnership. How common is it to eventually make $400k+ in-house/how difficult is it to transition back to a firm? Thanks!

Salary check. I am currently an in house attorney. 12 YOE. Large company with great coworkers doing regulatory work for the insurance industry. Good work life balance. I live in a high COL city. Out of curiosity and to test the market, I interviewed at a FAANG. Did not get the job, but found out TC was 350k, significantly higher than my TC 230k. I thought I was compensated fairly, but would love to see your thoughts.
