Has anyone switched from litigation to corporate/transactional practice later in their career (i.e. 5th year and on)? How did you do it and how did you explain the switch? Did you take a class year cut?

You’ll likely need to start over as a junior - eg second year. they expect third years to be able to run deals

Why do people want to do this? Is it litigation that bad? Why not a different area of litigation, the skills are so transferable

like

Some people are just better suited for different types of legal practice. There was a post yesterday where someone was asking how to switch from corporate/transactions to litigation.

Yes, people have done this. Yes, it requires a significant class year cut.

I figured a class year cut was a given. Thanks

How do you deal with a manager / junior partner who is always nitpicking and questioning why you did what you did, or telling you what you did is the wrong way to do things? It’s generally prefaced with them only doing this to help you grow, but has the exact opposite effect on me. And then when you try to explain your POV, you’re tagged as being defensive. Generally ends me with saying I’m sorry. No other partners at the firm have ever raised any concerns on my communications or work product.

Would love to hear thoughts on best approach of you are a senior associate at V10 firm. Do you just become counsel until they tell you that partnership is not in the cards or do you try to hop to the first partnership (equity, or at least NEP with clear progression to equity if you bring in some business) opportunity at a say V50 firm. I’m not home grown at my current firm, but do have a small book currently.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Our group recently began a mentoring program - 1st through 5th years get paired up with 6th year+ associates or partners and are encouraged to meet up (virtually) at least a couple times a month. I've never really had a proper mentor before - they've always been super formal and fizzled out after 1-2 sessions. I think it'll be different this time since I've worked with this person a lot and they seem eager to start, but I don't know what to talk about. What are good topics/questions to discuss?
