I have an initial recruiter phone interview with Square Thursday. Is it it just a phone call or is it a video call and they didn’t specify. If it’s a video call what’s the dress code like? I’m coming from consulting so all my interviews were in suits. Any tips to get past the recruiter phone screen?

Are you a new hire or internal promotion? If it's a promotion you can stop reading, but for a possible new hire here's some info to help you decide. Disclaimer: I can't tell you whether or not to go for it, that's a personal decision, but hopefully this information can help.
Avalara is currently owned by private equity, having been bought back in Oct 2022. At the time Avalara had roughly a market cap of $1 billion. There's two way PE makes money off a company, either by accelerating grown or increasing efficiency. Avalara has attempted to do both, but as you can imagine it's hard to get the growth numbers PE wants to see (20%-40%) when you're a billion dollar company. As a result the company has leaned VERY heavily into the efficiency gains. Efficiency gains leads to layoffs, which has led to a meritocracy system, which has led to a highly competitive and protectionist type env. While I don't have first hand experience to compare it to, I'm told it's an environment very similar to Amazon. Some people thrive in that some don't. What I will say is, if you get on a good team, and have good management around you, you can be shielded from some of those challenges. There are a fair number of people here that still care about their teammates, and growing and succeeding as a team. Lastly Avalara is in the the later stages of our PE's involvement so there's a chance the company will IPO or be sold in the not to distant future and culture could change. It also means there's limited opportunities for equity.
Hope this helps you decide and best of luck.
