How are your cases assigned? Ours are assigned based on case number. So we have the same number of cases but his case list may have more active motions than mine at a certain time or vice versa.
Assuming you are assigned the same number of cases, if you have a slow period, tell your judge you have time for more assignments. We shuffle cases around when one person is slow and another is busy.
If you are intentionally being assigned less cases, then that's a different conversation you need to have with your judge.
Thanks for your words. It’s got me down in the dumps. I’ll mention something next week. Thanks again ☺️
Our assignments started out generally equal, but one of my co-clerks works very quickly and tends to run out of work. But she checks in with our judge or career clerk, and one of them always has something else that needs to be done.
Keep in mind that even if a judge hands out the same number of opinions, orders, research projects, etc., some take far longer than others. It not even about a finished page count. Some issues are just tougher and take a lot more time.
If you're out of things to do during normal business hours, I'd definitely suggest you just go ask for more work. Simple as "Judge, I believe I've finished all my assignments. What else can I do for you today?"
If not....maybe use the time for personal research or study?
That’s smart! I’m going to give that a try
This is also the way it works at a law firm. You're light on work, it's up to you to fix the problem.
