It’s such a complicated issue. On one hand, I hope this isn’t part of a larger trend, but on the other, it feels like there are so many pressures on education funding right now.
There is a well-funded movement with a long-term goal of eliminating public education. This story from Texas could perhaps be a part of that. It's unclear how successful these efforts to close public schools will be nationwide. But in some parts of the country it will probably happen with increasing frequency.
You are correct. Our governor is actively trying to dismantle public education through a voucher program.
Rising Star
Not in our district.
Are these closures a consequence of the states push for vouchers /homeschooling/virtual school etc. It’s like they’re preparing for this now that Abbott has the votes to push through a vouchers program. Seems he’s been pushing for a program that would offer taxpayer money to families for their child's schooling outside of public education. I don’t know if it’s connected but…
Yes, they shut down like 4 schools in my city last year and it was such a political struggle on both sides. I still think it was a huge mistake for them to do it, but we teachers had very little sway
In San Antonio, most districts have serious funding problems, but only a few are shuttering schools.
Changing demographics, and where this cities population growth is happening is having the biggest impact.
Students in my area absolutely hate going to school, and if we had an alternative to traditional schooling, this would greatly benefit them. As long as someone is home to supervise, the institution of traditional education is outdated and far too expensive for kids to loiter in the hallways and smoke in the bathrooms. This, of course, does not account for all of our students, but a massive building filled with 120 teachers who teach the same subjects as the next building with another 120 teachers teaching the same material, coupled with half a million dollars for administrators, is simply not sustainable. Something drastic needs to be done to eliminate traditional education in America and offer a more flexible option.
In the district I work for, there are many open positions that aren't being filled because there are not enough interested candidates. I think there will always be enough teaching positions.
