Merit is a depressingly small part of why people get promotions. I have seen far too many people receive promotions entirely because of their loud personality which often translates to an ego in a management position. And I do really wish upper management would recognize that a good employee does not always make a good leader.
100% agree. It can be sooo frustrating
I wonder how they got there and how they continue to keep a job there. I know there are a ton of things I don’t see, but from what I do see, dones’t make sense a lot of the time.
Lol yes!!
Nope. I’ve generally assumed that they got to where they got to through some combination of ability, drive, connections, and good luck, and are staying there because they’re providing value to someone even I can’t see it. And if they’re not providing that value, they won’t be there for that long.
I guess that is true, there is some value. But that value doesn’t always make them great people to work with. That all said, there’s plenty of resources on bad bosses so I guess my question is asked and answered

ALL. THE. TIME.
There are so many ways people get into positions. There’s no reason just to guess. That’s why I am a hesitant about salary transparency. There’s just too many factors it could be what was going on in the company or market when they were hired.
Yes that’s true SDM1. It does make things frustrating but I guess it is what it is
All the time! Not in my whole organization but definitely in my department.
Dang, how do you handle it?
