Having a separate work phone is supposed to create boundaries.
But when it’s in your bag during vacation, the boundary feels thin.
Do you leave it at home, turn it off, or keep it nearby?

Unless your on the board of your company why aren't you marking yourself as OOO and/or off the grid?

It is crazy sometimes... it seems we are all expected to reply because of our phones

Unless I am working, my work phone is off. I don't check emails after hours, on vacation, or on the weekends. I definitely still keep those boundaries in place.

Good for you! I need to learn the ways

Leave that phone at home! Why take a vacay if you going to be plugged in?

👌

At my work, most folks will take the workphone turned off and out of site, and either say 1)`in emergency text me at (personal number) or 2) more commonly list a contact or contacts in out of office replies who have their personal number but screen when to use it.

Traveling internationally can be different ... security screens if you are even allowed to take it due to potential increased exposure of company or client data.

Yeah we usually do that but I have gotten texts on my personal phone

Im on call 24/7 so my situation is a bit different. Nights & weekends the work phone is with me and on, vacation the phone is off and my status is OOO. Once/day on vacation I'll turn it on, check up on whats going on, then it goes off. Anyone with a real authority to determine if something truly sn emergency has my personal phone number and can reach me. The other 99% don't.

Its literally the only way to actually be in a leadership position and balance work/life. Balance doesn't mean the structure is the same every day, week, month, or year. It just means that boundaries are structured and need to be respected. I hear a lot of younger people demanding employers respected those boundaries but they want it to be a constant routine. Respected is earned, not an entitlement.

I leave it at home, don't want to lose it somewhere I shouldn't have it and then have to explain it to the company.

Fair

If I truly need rest, I leave it at home or powered off. Otherwise I am mentally half at work. Boundaries only work if they are physically enforced.

Yep

You guys are getting separate work phones?

Believe me it is not as amazing as it sounds...

Work phone is off or silent! Vacation means no work plain and simple! Mental health is also important

👍

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

I’m currently interviewing with a few top 10 firms and a couple top 100 firms for a mostly remote experienced associate/new senior role. Does anyone have any tips on virtual interviews and how to gauge the culture of the firm and if it really will be a good fit for you? I’m struggling to figure out that out because I used to gauge it on the feeling I got while in their office during interviews. Any suggestions would be helpful :)

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?
