If you’re referring to when your new organization is conducting their background check, Big4 only provide your last title and dates you worked there. You could sue for defamation otherwise which is why these organizations do not provide additional information. Now if your old manager is friends with your new manager, they might talk in more detail
I’ve worked at two separate Big4 firms and I’ve requested the background check every time from my new employer to see what was requested versus sent. A lot of the background companies are only hired to confirm you worked there based on the dates provided. I also worked at a place that had access to LexisNexis and conducted a background check on myself - again only things available are what’s publicly available
I had a manager who got asked to leave one Big4 for inappropriately touching interns and was hired at the next Big4 within 2 months. To this day that second Big4 had no idea this guy did this. I know this because I worked at the same 2 Big4 with this guy
I am based in the US, so that’s where this perspective is coming from. Can’t say for UK background checks
