It’s called paying your dues.
At large, any corporate work sucks, just have to figure out the match between your abilities/skills, what you more or less enjoy/tolerate, the best pay, etc.
I worked in different industries and have friends across different industries; long hours, corporate bs, etc. etc. is the case almost everywhere. Sometimes you get on a team/client that is better than the other, but over the entire career, there’ll be not only up and downs, but maybe even the need to shift and adapt/pivot.
Don’t make a job your whole life, find a way to get the most out of it; and if it’s really not working out, see if you can find a better path.
Thanks appreciate your comment, this is not my first job so I know how bad other places can be ( I used to work in production) so I’m grateful to be where I am. It’s her first proper job so she’s freaking out thinking it’s going to be this bad everywhere.
I guess I can just hope she pulls through and trusts the process.
That does indeed sound like it sucks and would burn most people out. Not every agency works like this, so your partner is right to be upset. In a better job market, I'd say start looking around.
It's bad right now, but you do have to build resilience. Without it you won't make it, sad news is that even with it you probably won't make it either if things stay this way.
👆🏿This. You need to build resilience and grit, not just for your career but for your life. This industry is changing and those who succeed and thrive will be the ones who uunderstand emotional management, grit, resilience and how to find fulfillment outside of work.
Any advice? I tried to assure them that this is our first agency and that we might have to grin and bear it for now before we find an agency that truly fits us. I do have a feeling that they are finding everything too corporate but the reality is. Working late/ facing rejection and annoying clients is kind of a given. Even if you were a film director you face rejection a lot till you make it.
We’ve all been there.
This is called paying your dues. If they don’t like it, they probably need to find a smaller agency. However, the pay and benefits will be different. That being said, the grind is real, if they can’t handle it they should probably move on.
