Hey, all! So, I am 58 years old, female, lots of comms experience. I recently had a second interview at an org for a comms position that would be part of a small team. I would be the oldest team member if I was hired.

During the interview, with both the hiring manager and the manager's boss, one of them said "This is a young team, would you be comfortable..." and the other one interrupted and asked a different question.

And now I've been ghosted. I think it was ageist? What do you all think?

If you already think it, it’s probably better to not work with people like that. You may have had a lucky escape.

My first thought is to sue them. But anyone in that organization dumb enough to ask a question like that says something about their organization…..they won’t last!

like

Agree!

Yeah, this is ageist AF. 🚩

“This is an immature team.” “This is an inexperienced team.” “You’d need to do a lot of up skilling for your colleagues.” Way better way to have put this.

like

That was 100% ageism and I cannot believe they asked you that. I would honestly talk to an attorney. That is so wrong of them and I am so sorry that happened to you.

like

I’m not sure there’s any legal recourse at this juncture, unfortunately. It might be worth giving feedback to the recruiter, though, and suggesting the interviewer needs anti-bias training because it poses a legal risk to them.

Run far far away.

like

Um, yeah, 100% ageism. Sorry that you went through that... I'm also your age and would hate to be in the market right now.

like

I am so sorry. You're too old in their minds. Of COURSE it was ageist. I've had the same experience many times ... and when I've posted on LinkedIn, I've gotten hundreds of me-toos. Ageist discrimination is absolutely ignored by companies, regulators and the law ... even if it IS illegal. America loves you if you stay in the grandma/grandpa world and otherwise doesn't care if we drop dead.

I only applied and was accepted to one deferred MBA program (Darden) my senior year. It comes with a $30k scholarship, but at this point I only find an MBA to be worth it if it’s mostly covered. I have a 710 gmat that’s good for a couple more years, is it worth retaking to see if I could be eligible for more scholarships? At that point, should I just apply to more schools if I retake?

Interesting all the noise about these PPT, my take:

The pandemic took all the upside of an IB analyst life (client meetings in person, fancy trips, suit up, worshiped at networking events) and left all the juniors with the downside (long hours, monkey-like type of job, aggressive work environment).

Not that the complaints are not sort of legitimate but you may need to revise the decision-making process that led you to accept a return offer. Specially if you were looking for less hours.

15 YOE, recently started my first tech PR job at a large, stable company & have been asked to get ~20 SMEs in front of media. Subject matter is not sexy. I lead PR for all of U.S. & have no other PR colleagues. My agency’s budget is 100k/year & they’re spread too thin to hit their KPIs. I feel set up to fail & feel we should be focusing on a handful of SMEs and only our sexiest topics. Any advice on mitigating unrealistic expectations for coverage?
