Current sanction strategy is focused on damaging Russia, not deterring Putin.
We don't think Putin will directly change behavior due to sanctions, but the collapse of the Russian economy will hurt Russia's ability to maintain the war, and possibly cause the internal strife needed for Russia to change it's political stance on Ukraine.
Oil sanctions are especially critical or Russia as Russia is a petro-state.
“The elites” 🙄 please stop.

Are you equally as upset by the long-term effects of stimulus checks?

Prices are going to rise either way.
The US doing this alone won’t impact Putin much as China or India can buy up the relatively small amount we buy from Russia. If we can convince our allies to follow suit, it would absolutely hurt Putin as oil makes up some 44% of their revenue. That said, if that would happen, the price of oil would go ever higher.
Yeah and 45% of Germany’s gas needs would have to filled with something. I think they’ll start using wood.
@SBA1 so if sanctions doesn’t deter Putin and ultimately it’s the common man in the US, EU who will suffer from the rising prices for everything, it’s kind of hard for me to digest that the Elites are indeed out of touch with reality. I can absorb the cost, but I am really worried about normal civilians who make less than 50k annually. It seems like the government doesn’t care and we are really robbing them. I think they are going to get a lot more poorer.

What A1 said. If you want to "@" me then address my points. Maybe your mom doesn't mind being ignored, but I find it disrespectful.

Oil prices are dictated GLOBAL supply and demand. Not by US.

💯 But to be fair, the US is a pretty large factor in both supply and demand.

For every dollar the price at the pump increases, how much more does somebody spend on gas in a year. Every time I run the math, it comes out to a pretty small amount. Any amount is annoying, but we're talking about ~$10 / week.

Op, I have been paycheck to paycheck with kids. I was a mechanic until I finished my online degree at 30yo and got my first office job. As a young parent, I remember silently crying at night on my parents' futon because my credit card was maxed out, we were out of groceries, and I used the last of my cash to fix the car I bought from a friend for $1,000 so I could get to work. I didn't know if I could get food on the table for my family.
Even then, $10 / week wasn't going to make or break me. If it would, I'd stand outside of McDonald's for half an hour and ask for change. Seriously, $10 / week is so easy to find. Gas price fluctuations are a relative non-issue to individual families, especially compared to things like medical bills, home / car repairs, loss of employment.
In America, $10 / week is nothing for 99.9% of the population.

Destroy the middle class. Make them dependent on government.

I mean, there are routes to mitigate damages. A robust anti-poverty program is a reasonable price for national security.
Regardless, the US's position is more in national security terms than pure moralizing. Invading a sovereign country on the border with NATO is a geopolitical threat. Especially if it signals that NATO is weak, as any invasion of NATO would mean the US is obligated to take deeper sacrifices.
My suspicion though is that the gas complaint is just complaining, as one of the biggest line-items on the US budget is the military and I don't hear many people (outside of radicals) demanding a huge cut there to get a tax cut or subsidy.
