Unions are not only for blue collar laborers. Have you heard of SAG?!!!!
This is actually a great example of how agencies skirt unions.
No to all the above but this is so smart of you to do a temperature check here! I hope you’re able to write that article. There’s also a Reddit thread that someone here pointed out which is similar in nature, (posting concerns/questions).
Is the staff at Adweek unionized?
I have nothing to add but ✊
I’ve never been to an “official” union meeting, but anytime I’ve talked to co-workers about it, it stalls out over fear of being blacklisted. I like my job. I’d love to be unionized, but I’m not going to risk my job and livelihood over it. Maybe that’s shortsighted. But, I’m not going to be the first to raise my hand.
Convos have stalled because there’s so many different agencies within each conglomerate that would need 51% of the vote. It’s risky organizing on this platform because of the anonymity. We’re sure HR & leadership have posted fish bait about various topics, so they’re keeping tabs. My take is many people want to unionize, but are unsure how to proceed & the risk of being fired in this market is not appealing.

I like being paid for performance - I make more because I’m worth more. Collective bargaining etc only works if you think everyone with your title has the same talent and work ethic as you. And for me they don’t. I get promoted sooner because I deserve it. I get bonuses because I deserve them. Creative jobs are not the same as labor jobs where everyone running the machine in a factory does exactly the same work.

Why do you think unionization would protect us against these threats you list?
Also, the way each department is run is so wildly different… it’s hard to envision one organization working effectively for all groups.
Take a look at literally any union and you'll get answers to your questions.
How do you unionize? I’d be all for it.
