One of the journals has a good outline bank. Try to make friends with the 3Ls on that journal.
lol thank you A4 🤣
I didn't go to NYU, but got my Tax LLM working full-time (at a big 4) and attending classes basically full-time in the evenings. I never stepped foot in the library. I somehow managed to get a 4.0, which was better than my law school grades. My biggest pointer is to network, especially with any adjunct faculty who works in big law or has big law connections. That's how I landed my current job.
Thank you! 🙂
It is not too late to be a debt free barista or social media influencer. It’s too late for me. Live the life I might have lived. Get out while you can!
lol thank you AA1 🤣🤣
I did the Georgetown Tax LLM, all these comments about living in the library are ridiculous- that’s for naive 1Ls that don’t know any better. You already completed law school- you know what to expect and how to prepare- hopefully you took tax classes already so partnership and corp 1 should be review. Attend the lectures, read the slides, do the reading (if that helps you)- I never bothered- as the professor always would cover what they would actually test on in the slides.
I found the program challenging but it really wasn’t that bad. I worked full time and still graduated with honors. I would just study intensely for 2-3 weeks before finals, rewatch all the slides and then knock out the final.
It’s honestly more important to figure out what your career goals are and network appropriately. My situation was unique- I was already working and used the LLM to help me get a better job in a niche market on the west coast. If you want to do east coast big law, you are going to need to bust your ass and take advantage of every opportunity NYU offers you for networking. Good luck- I'm sure you'll do just fine.
This is totally dependent on what someone hopes to get out of the program (which you sorta acknowledged). It might be fine for you to coast because you already have a job (this is not the norm in the full time program), but OP might be grinding for big law (again, which you sorta acknowledged) - in which case, absolutely it’s worth it to grind it out for 1 semester to put yourself in the best position possible second semester. Then if things go well for you (assuming you worked hard first semester to get best grades possible and you went to a decent enough JD), then you can relax second semester after accepting an offer. If your goal is accounting firm, you should be able to get a job if your grades aren’t terrible and you could probably get by coasting first semester as the big 4 jobs should be there second semester. Big law tho is very competitive (all markets, and not just NYC), and the competitiveness may vary year to year depending on firms needs and broader market
I got my LLM at Georgetown, so it may be different, but all I would say is to understand the value of networking with professors, peers, alumni, and practitioners who hold positions you’re interested in. If you network effectively between the group of people who I listed, you may find people who have taken the same course with the same professor who can give you insight of how to be successful, or learn from them how to effectively navigate the Code and Regs.
Thank you STA 1!!
I am at a V10 out of that program. Just live in the library from August until finals. It’s a critical semester, just like 1L year. You need to be in the top 50% for any shot at big law in tax. Better to be in top 25%. If tax is too hard, do exec comp or SALT.
Thank you A2! Yeah I heard that Fall semester should be like 1L on steroids, and this really scared me 🤣
Don't take any classes with Humpheries (financial products prof). He's not great. Try to take classes with adjuncts, particularly ones that are still in big law or were former big law but haven't been retired for too long. They're the most valuable resources for connections and can teach you the most useful stuff.
Partnership tax is offered in the spring only, I think. Not sure though.
I went into the NYU LLM wanting a job in biglaw tax (not exec comp) and studied harder than I ever did, particularly in the first semester. Worked out well for me. Lots of other students are serious about studying too so it was nice to study together and develop friendships that way. I did zero networking or job searching in the fall semester and spent all of my efforts on studying. In the spring semester I attended the job fairs and also cold emailed many many firms. Ended up getting my biglaw tax job through a cold email, and the only reason the firm took a look at my resume was because of my very good fall grades.
Thank you A3, this is helpful! Do you mind sharing your Fall GPA at NYU, or are you aware of any GPA cutoff for Biglaws? I’m currently a 3L at a T30, with a 3.5 GPA, and wanted a job in biglaw tax too!
