I work heavily in AWS and am looking to learn another cloud platform. I have zero knowledge of azure and gcp and would like input on which to learn. Azure would make sense since its the second largest in terms of market share, but GCP seems far more interesting and technically challenging with things like Kubernetes and BigQuery.

I’ll share my experience. I’m a DevOps guy but have been playing more of a Solution Architect / Technical Product Manager role. I was exposed to some AWS in my last engagement but in my current one I had to do a lot of GCP-Terraform Infra-as-code work. So I went into GCP with both feet in and I really like GCP. I do think their data and AI/ML services are superior than both AWS and Azure. They have Cloud Spanner that defied the laws of physics by defying the CAP theorem. Also, their sector specific managed data APIs make their offerings unique. But I don’t think they will go beyond the 3rd rank. It’s Azure’s market to win and AWS’ market to lose. GCP will gain more customers who have taken a multi-cloud approach and will be able to sell these data/ML/Anthos offerings and gain market share. Also, balance out the market more. That’s just my perspective but I’m open to hearing any feedback.

like

“Most multi-cloud approaches will utilize AWS/Azure” - It’s quite possible in the examples that you are exposed to. Same with the cloud preference of the Data scientists you have spoken of as I have probably spoken to a different set of data scientist who find GCP AI and Industry specific data APIs a cut above what Azure and AWS has to offer. It’s quite possible that we are both limited in our view point due to our biases. I’m really curious what was the feedback from the data scientists who don’t like GCP. Thanks for sharing your perspective. Definitely helps to refine mine.

Can’t go wrong with either, really. Fewer people know GCP than Azure, so you could position yourself well for a GCP-related role. On the other hand, you’d probably have more opportunities to use Azure experience/skills.

I’d do a fundamentals course of both and see which one you like the best.

like

I’ll add this also - Azure has free cert renewal, while with GCP you have to retake the exam every two years. So it’s cheaper to invest in learning Azure over the long run.

Go Azure first before gcp. If anything, Azure is closing in on aws and given how Microsoft has done recently it's not unthinkable that eventually azure becomes bigger than aws.

funny

Azure :)

funny

I’n my uncredited opinion, GCP will close in on Azure and AWS will remain consistent. Reason for this is as tools become more open source, multi cloud, etc, Azure customers will find that they are not as locked in and will make make an escape. Azure doesn’t seem to be meeting the big data and ML expectations needed by their larger customers. Maybe synapse and purview will help, but I personally doubt it. They are a little late to the game as Databricks just announced GCP availability and boast easily moving resources between environments. We will see.

I also heavily dislike Azure.

like

This all the way. GCP is a drag on Google’s balance sheets right now, but they are pouring resources into the infrastructure/staffing/field teams. I learned cloud on AWS like most, but after switching to GCP and drinking the BigQuery koolaid, I am hooked.

If you’re learning for work/career I’d pick whichever aligns more closely with your career prospects or projects. You can’t go wrong really.

like

I’d go azure. The technology is largely the same.

Azure, for sure.

Maybe I’m retarded but why is focus on one unique? Is it not like programming? Don’t like 90% of your skills/knowledge transfer?

Broadly speaking, yes. But when you start getting into the depths of implementation, the differences matter. Foundational things like IAM, networking, security are done differently in each provider. So, unless you want to bake in that learning curve as a cost, someone certified and with similar level of experience will always complete a task cheaper and faster. It took me a good 3-4 months of daily work to get to the same level of skill in GCP as AWS.

Kubernetes is not specific to GCP. Google invented it but it’s open source and every cloud provider has a managed Kubernetes service and many people just run it on their own.

Definitely Azure!

Sanity check. Going to preface this by saying I'm not in a rush. I wanted to get some good consulting experience so joined EY out of UG. Got early promo, but I've reached the point where I'm no longer growing (learning) much on my current team. I've become very interested in PE and want to give that a shot. I lack the resume experience.

Thinking to move within EY to an M&A focused group SaT or EYP. Do ~2 years and see if I still want that. Will that tick the box for most PE shops?

Question on travel during H1B lottery-

I am hoping to travel in August for something I have been interested for a while. The H1B lottery company however suggested that I don't travel between April and Oct. Can someone walk me through the possible scenario if I get the lottery in round 1 vs round 2?

If I get it in round 1, good chance I will be able to travel in Aug? (Petition out in Mar/Apr, should be done by Aug?)

If I get it in round 2, is it possible to file the petition in mid Aug?

TIA
