I think the reason you find fewer Black women as writers is because of the nature of the job. With artwork, there are fewer understandings of “right or wrong”. It’s all subjective, and you can prove your worth visually. But with writers, at least in my experience, there’s a lot of “wow you’re surprisingly well spoken” or questioning whether or not your work is correct because of the color of your skin. It’s harder to prove yourself when people assume you are less intelligent or less intellectual than what they think your job requires, and when racism like that crops up people are also less likely to give you the benefit of the doubt. It has been a constant battle trying to claw my way to the top. A lot of Black copywriters work for Black or multicultural agencies, and many simply freelance so they have more control over who they work with/what they work on. People only seem to respect my expertise and authority when looking for ads specifically for Black communities. And even then, it’s with the understanding I’ll use AAVE rather than “general” English.
It’s gotten me to a place where I want to quit advertising altogether. And I feel many have been where I am now and just went to seek work in a new space. My book isn’t where I want it to be because I’m routinely denied accounts that would help me get the edge to leave my current job. No awards so more prestigious places are also out. It’s a lot.
Ah, gotcha - thank you for the clarification!
I’ll add that it starts with education and exposure. I never even knew copywriting was a career choice until AFTER I graduated college with my master’s degree in communications. No one in my family, friends or even community worked in communications. To be completely honest, I’m still clueless about how to advance my career, but just decided to put in the work to master my craft until I figure it out. It’s also hard to organically connect and network with other creatives of color when you can’t find them! That’s why I joined Fishbowl and started looking for other resources.
Oh man! Can you share some of the issues you’re having? I’m grossly underpaid but in a pretty inclusive, family friendly and kind work environment. Work-life balance can be off sometimes but it’s manageable. Wondering when I get to making decent money at a better job will I have to deal with the racism, sexism and crazy work hours.

* I’ll also leave this bowl after a few days since I don’t want to intrude! Just wanted to throw this job out there. Also I asked the second question because a friend of mine specifically works to place more POC and women in advertising roles and it’s very hard for them to find Women of Color writers at these high levels (also happy to hook anyone up with her)
