Food Budget: Exclude PG rent from your calculations, as PG food might not suit your taste every day. Stick to a monthly food budget of ₹5,000, which includes all meals and snacks.
Commute: Choose a PG or accommodation close to your office so you can walk to work. This eliminates the need for a bike or car and saves on travel expenses.
Laundry Tips: Bangalore's cool climate can make drying clothes a challenge. To save on laundry expenses, wash your clothes late at night or early in the morning and take them off the drying line before 8 AM to avoid unnecessary trips to the laundry service.
Shopping: Avoid buying expensive shoes or clothes offline. For someone in a middle-class stage:
An expensive pair of shoes should ideally not exceed ₹2,500.
An expensive shirt should not exceed ₹1,200.
Shopping online can help you save ₹200–300 on each purchase. While I’m not sure about women's budgets, the online option applies universally and can help everyone save.
Public Transport: While walking to work is ideal, if public transport is necessary, rely on buses or metro services instead of cabs or autos.
Entertainment: Avoid first-day-first-show tickets for movies, especially Telugu films, as ticket prices can be quite high. Plan smarter movie outings.
Relationships and Expenses: If you're in a relationship, adopt a balanced approach to shared expenses. Splitting costs 50-50 not only helps with financial management but also ensures mutual respect. If your partner suggests postponing plans due to financial constraints, respect that instead of insisting on covering everything—it’s about understanding and equality.
Avoid statements like, “It’s okay, I’ll take care of it,” as it might unintentionally seem disrespectful to your partner's independence.
Personal Advice: never hire anyone for physical needs. Focus on building character and values instead.
Networking and Friends: Make friends who share similar values and financial discipline.
Emergency Fund: Build and maintain an emergency fund. Start small, but ensure you have at least 3–6 months of expenses saved for unforeseen circumstances.
Investments: Prioritize saving and investing regularly. If you already have investments, continue them without interruption for long-term financial security.
Thanks mate. This is useful.
Hello,
1. Use public transport which is well connected
2. There are so many free / low cost experiences in city ex: parks , lakes, museums for weekends
3. Cook your meals if you don’t like PG food , many pGs have self cooking option.
4. Every month track your expenses and cut down on luxuries.
5. It’s okay to treat yourself but don’t go overboard.
I survived with 24k salary , saved 10k every month and invested in MF, after 5 years now I save 1 lakh per month, those initial habits never really left me and really helped me build a secure financial future for myself, focus on consistency being stingy in your initial years of career is what shapes your future. Never compare yourself with others, I have seen tables turn around, we are in it for a long term game :)
Thanks for the tips mate.
