Honestly, I'm not sure I agree. Maybe it's making things a little bit easier, but I don't think it's replacing anyone anytime soon. They want to say that AI is replacing every single job across the world, but we're nowhere close to that.
If anything AI will replace attorneys. Instead of an associates drafting pleadings you will be able to train paralegals to enter the information for AI to draft. Then the paralegal can cite check to confirm the case law is accurate. Then only one attorney is needed to read and approve. Especially depending on what kind of law. I did an AI CLE and there are programs where you just scan the complaint and it makes discovery requests. So are you gonna have an associate scan that or a paralegal? Also who is going to run the AI programs most attorneys can even figure out adobe 😋. I highly recommend checking out a CLE or even getting some training the only people that will be made obsolete are the ones that refuse to learn new technology.
Law license withstanding, unfortunately even though Legal assistants/Paralegals do a lot of the work, at the end of the day they’re still just that without that diploma.
In my opinion it won’t replace all paralegals/assistants. It will, if anything, it will streamline the processes.
Ai won't replace us but it will force our role to evolve. AI will cost money so attorneys will need to be able to pay subscription fees. Proficiency with AI will become a job requirement for legal support roles. I think the Paralegal role will eventually evolve to include more technology skills and maybe even basic coding. I work in intellectual property and have noticed that docketing roles are already transitioning into legal operations positions. There may be a day where the basic paralegal role is half legal support and half tech.
I've been hearing similar things. I think if it hasn't happened already, it is bound to happen so we might as well use this time to pivot/upskill so we can have better jobs. Have you considered moving into more people management or different analyst type roles like compliance or project management? Those are two areas I'm considering working towards..
Thanks for the suggestion about compliance. I am now thinking about it.
I haven’t experienced anything firsthand, also not surprising to me to hear it, though. AI or not, it’s never a bad idea to try and find certain niches, fewer opportunities but ideally better chances for you.
I also do not think it will be replacing paralegals, if anything, it'll enhance our roles even more! Those paralegals that embrace AI and really learn how it can make things more efficient, will likely stand out more, and be seen as Legal Technologists or Legal Operations Specialists; so in a way, it does pivot the paralegal career into a technological area. Just as those paralegals from the 70's to 80's or 80's to 90's, that had to move away from traditional typewriters, and slowly everything moved to computers. The computer never replaced paralegals or legal assistants when attorneys started using computers. It just enhanced their role even more. I watched a really great CLE webinar class on Generative AI and it made sense that our roles will evolve as technology evolves too.
AI won’t replace lawyers or support staff BUT lawyers and support staff that master AI usage will dominate and replace lawyers and support staff that refuse to adapt and adopt the new tech. I’m seeing it at forward thinking firms.
One firm owner told me recently that one custom ai product allows his existing staff to handle three times as many files with no added stress etc.

We were told in an CLE class, "Ai is just a tool." Personally, I like the old style research, Lexis, Requested documents, etc.

As I said to others here, Ai is dangerous. In a CLE class an attorney told the class (not just me as I mistakenly said in a previous response), " Remember Ai is just a tool." It is foolish for an attorney to allow Ai to replace their paralegal. They too can be replaced then.
