Hot Question: Are the people that leave big law largely people that aren’t as good at it or does burnout hit over and underachievers equally?

False choice. There are many reasons to leave besides burnout and incompetence.

I’ve seen many great associates leave and 9/10 it’s a lifestyle choice. Some are encouraged to leave because of a pay rise, but many take pay cuts to reap the benefits of a more normal working life. Some people want certainty over their work hours and control over their lives. Working regularly past 8-9pm, weekends, on call all the time etc is not the norm, and some people see how partners live and don’t want a piece of it.

I left biglaw to start my own firm. Happened to run into a federal magistrate judge who used to be a partner at big law firm with me. He told me that one of the biggest surprises he had as a judge is that good legal work is lawyer dependent, not firm dependent. He expected to see the best legal work coming from big law and shoddy work coming from smaller firms. What he found instead was that some big law lawyers aren’t that good, and some small firm lawyers are. The original question is interesting because it reflects a bias we learned in law school - big law is for the best and it’s where the best go. Anyone who leaves is crazy or can’t hack it. I suggest to all who hold that bias up expand your mind. You can be a great lawyer anywhere. In fact, you can even make as much money, or more, at a smaller firm if you are able to develop business. There’s no one answer to why people leave big law. None of them can hack it I guess. Some font gave the talent. Some don’t like the culture. Some just want to do something different. Define your worth by external factors - like where you work - at your peril.

I think biglaw is the same as working in a big corporation and climbing the ladder. It’s a lot of a** kissing. I’m leaving because I previously was an executive at a top 3 corporation in the world, and I don’t like the ladder. I like to build my own steps.

So everyone is different.

Hey there! Does anyone have leads or advice for pursuing remote internship or employment opportunities in IT while in college? For reference, I am beginning my sophomore year in college with 3 majors within CSCI and am working on attaining my A+ certificate then my Network+. I am partaking in a network infrastructure internship position right now for a large lending corporation (my only internship thus far). I am unsure if I want to continue with infrastructure or software. Thank you in advance!

Hi fishes,

I think I am slipping into depression. My life seems to have no meaning and all I do is work. I don't get time for myself or my family, friends and loved ones. But I can't leave my job and take a break as I need the financial support.

I also feel I am earning way less than my peers which makes me feel like a loser. 4.5 years of work-ex and 16LPA.

What should I do? I need good wlb but also need money badly.

First time poster here!

After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

Though my current company is an mnc but not that big and no work pressure is there, amazing work life balance. However, there is little to no learning and its very slow, the project is just starting and the client itself is not clear what they want. Do you think I should switch just because its a big 4. Please help me decide. Yoe -3.5

Is it crazy to switch a job while undergoing IVF?
I’ve been in my current role for almost 4 years. While I am generally happy, & have flexibility with time off for personal matters, there are things that bother me. I have an offer for way more money, manager title (which I want), much larger bonus & IVF benefit is better. However, I’m in the middle of stims and it is STRESSFUL. Part of me can’t imagine taking on a new role while I’m in the middle of this. But also feel like I can’t pass it up
