I can see what you're saying, but as an introvert, I would rather work in the office by myself than with a bunch of people. I'm always happy when I go in and it's a very empty space. It is annoying to have to commute, I definitely agree with that, but the less in-person comms I have to do, the better.
Genuine question: What value do you find in going to the office if its an empty space?
2 days at home is still better than 0 days.
Honestly, any strict RTO is nonsense. There are too many variables for a one-size-fits-all to make sense. For some teams/functions, being in the same physical space is essential. For almost everyone else, as-needed is best.
Agree that it isn't a one size fits all approach like some organizations are trying to do.
I always wonder if they do that on purpose to test our patience or what 🤣 It seems so counterproductive to not have employees scheduled in office at the same time. I wonder if they're just trying to keep tabs on everyone and not thinking logically.
I can't tell you how many times I've come into the office just to meet with someone and they end up calling in on Zoom or just canceling. It is BEYOND frustrating.
Makes sense for your team to be on the same hybrid days. But my experience is that cross team work, designed to prevent those dreaded “silos,” still creates challenges.
I think the whole “hybrid” arrangement should really be “customizable” instead. Some people like “no office”, others like occasional, and others like RTO. We are in a digital/virtual era, so let people/teams have ownership in what works for them depending in the team, project, type of work and where folks work best.
Introvert or not, sometimes coworker tics, constant chatter, or the music I can still hear from headphones sitting next to a colleague is enough to impair my sanity while trying to get the work done.
We all (leadership, I’m talking to you) need to understand how humans work best to ensure companies work well.
Just because we’ve always had office work doesn’t mean it should always be required to get work done.
Where’s the innovative spirit and support for people doing their best work—that’s the thinking that transforms and elevates rather than controls and shackles.
I’m pro-choice on this issue too!
Definitely agree it isn't a one size fits all issue. As someone that is so easily distracted being in-office kills my productivity when it is a day when my intent is to be heads down to knock things out.
