I am in ID and at this stage in my career I have a billable target and know how much I need to bill in order to hit that target, and I always do this with including 2 weeks of true vacation time in mind. It isn’t the best mental approach, but it is how I can rationalize truly taking time off and not working during a vacation
The one thing about insurance defense is there is always work to do, so for me, the amount I can bill each week is pretty predictable. There are no real ebbs and flows. This makes it a little easier to manage.
Just curious, how much do you make a year to deprive yourself of your earned time off? Is it really worth it?
I’m in KY, so that plays a role.
Not sure what your MBR is but a lot of ID firms have absurdly high requirements so perhaps that's part of the reason you feel that way OP. It's not that difficult to take PTO and still stay on track hours-wise if the expectations are reasonable.
My MBR is 1900 (as opposed to "1900 but the unspoken expectation is 2200") and the only real obstacle to PTO is keeping the calendar clear. Perhaps you haven't found the right fit.
It’s definitely not the right fit. My senior partner has a spoken expectation for me that is well beyond the requirement. The pay is not worth the stress. I learned a lot and appreciate the experience, but it’s time for me to move on.
I recently left insurance defense, in large part, to escape this very predicament. 🤷♀️
This is why I am in house for an insurance company.
What carrier?
Take the vacation. Been in Coverage for 12 years now. The work never stops and burn out is real. Recharge your batteries.
You have to take vacations or else you burn out. Been doing this for 25 years.
Everyone is different, but Ive been doing it 10 years and I don’t mind the billables. I think it sets a clearly defined target for success. Once you get the hang of billing and assuming you have enough work, you can build up your time and take a lot of vacation time. I took around 5 weeks last year. On 3 of them I checked and sent some emails, but nothing more than a half hour or hour some days.
Does it bother you that you potentially missed out on bonus money by taking those 5 weeks off? That would’ve been something I’d have trouble with
