How are you preparing for AI to take over most white collar and engineering jobs? I’m trying to think of ways to get ahead of it, if not profit from it. I think it’s inevitable, whether that’s one year or 5 years from now. Should we all be buying HVAC companies?

AI is not “taking over most white collar jobs“ in a year or 5 years, relax.

Spend time learning AI tools and using them aggressively to make yourself more efficient (instead of catastrophizing about how they’re about to replace you), and figure out how to originate business and own client relationships.

And just to be super clear before anyone comes at me, when I say “AI” I mean LLMs, because that’s literally all the current wave of “AI” products actually is. My main point is that LLMs are just not living up to the hype. They don’t think. They pattern-match on digitized data. That’s it. And a huge chunk of what actually drives real decisions in the real world either never gets written down anywhere or gets captured so badly it’s basically noise.
Oh and they can’t be held accountable for anything. So you’ve got systems that are missing context, missing judgment, and missing any skin in the game, and you’re telling me people want to hand them high-stakes decisions? lol that’s completely laughable, man. They can be useful tools, sure (I use them every day in my practice). But “reliable autonomous decision-maker to replace most white collar workers”? Come on.
And this is fundamental to how the technology works. Marginal improvements wont fix a that. Now, could some actually intelligent AI eventually significantly eat white collar work? Yeah, probably. I’m not ruling that out. But that’s a completely different claim about a completely different technology that does not currently exist. “AGI is 3 years away” is a different conversation. We’ve been having that conversation for decades. So until something like that is real, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Been getting some interesting ads in Georgia. Got a letter about how Jon Ossoff is going to destroy Georgia’s economy and attacking him and his character. This was generated by David Perdue.

Ossoffs response? Bring up all the ridiculousness Perdue has done and how he’s left Georgia in a worse position. Didn’t say Ossoffs name once, just said get rid of Perdue.

How do firms calculate how much parental leave to provide, either paid or unpaid. Or do they just pick a number, like “yeah they can get to know their kid in a few weeks and I couldn’t possibly have that attorney out for 12 weeks?” I’m at a small firm, no FMLA or state requirement. We get four weeks paid and four weeks unpaid. Would like to push for more but not sure how to argue costs side of it.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!
