I applied to a lot of places. One of them happened to be UX. they called it content writing, because they see anything on the app (product) as content.
my experience wasn't the nicest. maybe because I couldn't bring myself to care about buttons and descriptions. plus I got laid off within 3 months because they didn't need me. their content designers were using chatgpt already
so..yeah. my experience wasn't the best. but they definitely paid a lot more that the cw gigs. and there's not much heavy lifting on ideas or concepts (atleast for me)
Oo maybe this is relevant. but during the interview I told them that I was doing a UX course on Coursera. Which I was. This likely gave them the impression that I'm really into it.. after which they told me to not bother with the course because it's not helpful.
Later the hiring manager (also the Product Head) sent a couple of links to copywriting books (???) to read. and then hired me.
Any kind of “writing” job is a bad bet now because AI is going to eliminate all those positions within the next decade, if not sooner.
I’d pivot away from writing entirely.
A lot of tech companies refer to UX writing as "content design" now. I am a copywriter who essentially functions as a UX writer in my current job. (I handle web/mobile experiences at a large consumer tech company.) I had a UX designer review my book, and she said that her company wouldn't hire me because I don't have actual UX in my portfolio. She said a lot of tech companies want to see actual strategic work past just landing pages or app layouts. Having things like chatbots, error messages, form entries, etc. and showing how all of these help contribute to a seamless user journey are more what they're looking for.
That said, I'm also looking to transition. The only advice I got in regards to up-skilling was to look at product design courses. Any "UX writing" boot camps are likely BS. If you're a copywriter, you have the skills to be a UX writer, you just have to unlock the right thinking.
