I respond “Great, looking forward to our talk. What’s the headline?”

As a manager, I've often followed those messages up with "oh crap, that sounds bad, it's nothing bad I just want to be bought up to speed." Or some such.
I once sent an employee a request for a meeting at 4:30 on a Friday after she had been chewed out by a client earlier that day and realized how bad it looked to do so. Let her know the purpose was to vent about how out of line the client was.
As a manager, I sometimes stress over these. But with wfh, I can't just cover quick stuff without it being more formal, and frequently I really do just need 5 quick minutes from someone

I do the same for my direct reports. But I usually just say “don’t worry you aren’t getting fired”

Switch off that project asap, the only time ive had these worries was with managers that had a chip on their shoulder and took it out on underlings

I literally ask “Is it bad or good?” But formality with my bosses is nonexistent.

As a manager I do try to limit anxiety by giving context - perhaps a one line agenda in the invite to ease minds.
In the past I had a boss who would do “drive arounds” and would hover over me until I stopped what I was doing and had a physical conversations with her. She was also the type to come up to you , tap you on the shoulder and say “hey can we chat privately for a few” type of boss which put my anxiety on the highest alert all the time . Most of the time the ad hoc meetings were not serious just quick questions that could have been answered in an IM or a quick chat without the preamble song and dance of making it seem more serious then it was. She was a pretty bad boss.

Maybe focus on the 99% of the time it’s not bad news? Those are pretty good odds.
