Honestly I have ambassador status and the one time I tried to get a suit upgrade I was no. I don’t think you really get much other than a better point multiplier

The only real benefits of gold and silver are the points multipliers on spend. Platinum gets you lounge access. Titanium helps (but doesn’t guarantee) you get room upgrades. Ambassador gets you a largely useless person to talk to instead of calling the main phone line
Overall, status at Marriott is super diluted. Silver and gold are almost exclusively limited to bonus points accrual. You’re just so far down behind the higher statuses (who aren’t even getting upgraded as it is)
I've been upgraded a few times automatically. Mostly at the Fairfields and the like.
Most advantageous benefits of the status to me are bonus points and late check out. I've requested a late checkout multiple times without any issue.
Got it. So no real incentive to try to maintain status?
Gold Elite should give you Executive Elite status with National

Only success I've had with upgrades is using the chat function and being super nice and asking before arrival.
When you check in, let them know that the colleagues you are traveling with have asked you to meet them in the Club Lounge and ask for access for this stay as you’re getting close to Platinum. I’ve never had my request denied.

I've always asked for upgrades at check-in now. I've only gotten a higher floor or better view as Gold. The two stays I've had since becoming Platinum were both upgraded to a suite, one at a Marriott overseas and another at a W in the midwest.
I'm Platinum and I was just upgraded automatically at a Westin to a room on the Executive floor. I'd only booked a basic single king. I find it happens automatically when staff is attentive to it.
I hadn't been asking because this thread made it seem pointless. But for anyone else, just starting their status journey with Marriott: I've been automatically upgraded 2/2, since getting gold status. First was just higher floor, last was an upgrade to a top floor suite. So doesn't hurt to ask.
