I usually pair based on what I’m eating. This is my 2 cents
IPAs/Pale Ale - in your face hoppy and bitter. Got super popular for a while and used to be half the menu. Good with fried stuff IMO
Red/Amber/Brown/Dark Ale - Malty. Good with roasts and the like
Lager or Pilsner - Light and crisp. I’d have it with fish or something with a delicate flavor
Wheat (also seen as Wit or Hefeweizen). Kind of sweet, and fruity. Not my thing, but could go with cheese
Belgium - Similar to wheat beers, but often more floral notes.
Stout and Porter - thicker feel, not very bitter, sometimes sweet, usually notes of chocolate or the like. Usually good with sweets.
Other important one. Imperial means EXTRA. More alcohol, more taste. It’s turned up to 11. You’ll see imperial stouts or imperial IPAs. I’d recommend asking for a sample first before committing to a pint

Wit is a good “breakfast beer” if you’re tailgating, etc.

Ask the bartender. It’s literally part of their job to recommend.

This! But it also generally helps to know what kind you like (ipa, pale ale, lager, etc)

I would suggest going to a brewery and doing a tasting flight (get one of each from the list above) so you get an idea of what kind of beers you like and then you’ll know when the serve or bartender at a bar asks you. IPA and pale ale are going to be more intense flavor, lager, Pilsner, blonde ale are gonna be easier drinking lighter flavor, I personally don’t love wheat beers but I think a lot of people just starting our drinking craft beer gravitate towards them. Stouts and porters are like dessert beers in my mind. My go to is a pale ale or a Pilsner!

Price or alcohol content depending on how recently I got my paycheck
I'll usually base on how I feel - if I'm a bit hungry then I'll go for something heavier like a stout or a porter. Ditto if I'm going to linger for a while since higher alc % means I can sip comfortably. As a lady there are some types of beers I'll just straight up avoid depending on how bloat friendly my outfit is. If I'm ordering food then maybe a lager or ipa.
*Edit to add Really good notes above!!
I slowly learned about beers and remembered which types I liked and didn’t like. Not rocket science man
Belgian white, wheat ales, heifewezen, witbiers all are very easy on the palate.
Lager and pilsner 2nd.
Blue Moon and Stella Artois are awesome safe bets to start with.
I love IPA’s and different bars tend to carry different ones. So I sit and say “what do you like for IPA’s?” They usually give me a taster and I go with that or an existing one I already know. It’s fun!
Usually go for whatever craft Pilsner they have. There’s usually only one or two. Only type of beer I can stand.
Go for a tasting. Or order a flight
I like Belgian ales and porters. Guinness is my go to at bars with less selection.
Ask the bartender. Go to a brewery and do a tasting. If the place has beers on tap , also just ask for samples
If you know you like sours or fruity, ask the bartender, "I like a beer more on the sour side, what beer do you recommend?" If there's none, they will suggest an alternative based on what you already noted.
If I’m with friends, I just order what they’re having. Keeps it easy and I get to try new things.
