To me, you don't learn taste, you refine it. And it's up to you to do it. You need to expose your self into greatness so when you look back, you know your metric of what good is changes naturally. There is no shortcut other than setting aside time for you to study and research. Build a process where you are constantly exposed to great quality. I have an instagram account just following art, artists and studios. During the day, that's the account that is on so even on a break, I'm looking at good quality work. Use savee.it, pinterest, instagram folders, spend hours on D&AD checking all the world class work that has free access. It will build/refine as much as you expose yourself to it.
Enthusiast
Taste comes from experiences imo. That and something innate you either have or don’t.
Can taste be taught?
Not rhetorical. I don’t actually know.
I think the only way to evolve taste is to make things, then feel your own disgust at their shortcomings. That’s the fuel you need.
Also just exposure and research. Apple has good taste. Why? Figure it out.
Consume
Make and consume real art. The best creatives I know have a background or are actively doing real shit. Performing comedy, writing novels/screenplays/poetry, making music, designing video games, creating content (tiktok, shorts, movies). I studied screenwriting and music for years and I would be unable to grasp storytelling and expression at my current level if it were not for that. Also having a huge mental library of cinema is helpful for this job.
Watch other ads and start liking them.
Two part.
I find it helpful to say that ads work/don’t work, rather than I like/dislike them or they’re good/bad. Pushes you to deconstruct and articulate why to yourself.
Taste-wise as an art director specifically, it’s similar but there’s also a visual craft element. Understand hierarchy and layout. Understand what references/evokes what. Understand how to edit/simplify information. Understand why awarded (visual) work is praised by our peers.
Curate things you really love. Think about why you love them. Keep doing this over time. You’ll see how your tastes change.

I think everyone has a natural “style” but with every style there’s a spectrum from amateur to pro.
Beyond pro you’re creating a style but let’s save that for tomorrow.
