Anyone from Toronto ?
Just got a job at Deloitte M&A in Atlanta and am currently looking to buy a house. Would you advise I buy closer to Atlanta or the suburbs? I personally want to be in the suburbs but I hear the traffic situation is quite bad. Current consultants in Atlanta, how much time do you actually spend in the office vs remote vs client site? Would you advise I try and stay closer to the office?

Unrelated: PLEASE can we avoid using the term “civilians” to refer to people not in advertising.
Bad enough that stand up comics do this.
No need for us to introduce even more silly terminology into this industry that is already bursting at the seams with needless jargon.
Came to say this as well. But every group also uses normies, so we’re technically normies from others’ perspective.
My Dad literally said, “”Can’t you just call up a friend and get a job?” And the best, “aren’t there like help wanted signs that you can apply to?” I’m SVP level. Face palm.

Mine are and not successful, low standards - just work hourly wage jobs
Grey rock them for now. Like honestly if they’re too in their own bubble to understand and be empathetic, it’s not worth explaining.
Thank you for teaching me: "To "grey rock" someone means to deliberately make all interactions with them as uninteresting and boring as possible to discourage them from engaging further with you. It's a strategy used to disengage from toxic or abusive individuals by minimizing your emotional response and making yourself appear unrewarding."
I usually start with "Advertising in general is a volital field. Anyone who works in it knows that lay-offs are frequent and ebb and flow with client portfolios and the state of the economy. Our field is seen as necessary and expendable at the same time. It's maddening but I keep at it despite the perception of instability. I say perception because no one's job is ever stable. Our industry just does it more frequently."
By that time I usually can elicit a sympathetic nob before they say, "But what exactly is it that you DO? If people understood maybe it would be easier to get a job."
🤦♀️🙄🙃
I could use a sympathetic nob right about now.

Show them a graph of interest rates. And point to mid 2022. Then look at them and say “any questions?”
That is precisely when my gigs started to slow.
Tell them you started a Ecom wine business and you’re crushing it
If I have ONE more person offer up “have you tried freelancing?”. From people in the industry too.
It’s like….no, I thought I’d just turn down all those well paid freelance gigs that’d save my bacon on the off chance a perm role might appear?! Way to show you have zero understanding of what’s going on?!
My girlfriends mum said that there a shortage of train / tube drivers! Okay just do that instead then 🙂
I just tell them I’m being selective and looking for the right job and that I’m not in a rush.
Don't know if this will help. But I've been freelancing for seven years. Last full time gig was as an Executive Creative Director. I expected to get a job within a year or 2, was freelancing at great agencies. Then, COVID, and I knew I was on the extended "not having a full time job" program. I decided to hug freelancing. And not view it as a transition or bus stop anymore. I dove into it, learning as I went. It turned into it's own full time job. I told my family and friends, "I'm a full time freelancer," even if work was slow. I made connections and was able to get some great 6 month gigs. That paid very well. Did I look for full-time? Yes. Was I a bit more picky after freelancing with agencies? Definitely. Agencies are turning into fractional project hubs - they hire who they need to to get the work done. Smaller shops are, in essence, now fractional employment firms. The take aways - Tell everyone you are a full time freelancer. Grab onto any work - nothing is beneath someone who is confident and hungry. Work is work. Because it leads to more opportunities. Be content to not cross over the freelance line - be willing to tweak, to present to whoever, client or ECD or account person. And be willing to fill in for a vacationing staff member. Why? Because that is the new interview process. All these sites to help you get hired will drive you nuts. I've had 4 interviews in 5 years from 5 job sites. But I've had a thousand freelance jobs. Chin up, you can put yourself in a more positive head space, by hugging the freelance opportunities. It'll grow as you grow.
