How do you decide when it’s worth countering an offer. I just got one that’s fair, but I think they can go higher. I’m debating if pushing for a few thousand more is confidence or arrogance.

Starting at a fair offer can quickly become underpaid. If you feel like you can push, do it.

I always negotiate and push for a little more. You don't want to leave any money on the table. And from experience the worst they can say is no

Always counter… no risk in asking. It’s an automatic no if you don’t ask. And if they retract the offer simply because you counter, you probably shouldnt work there anyway.

Out of curiosity, how do you counter in this situation? Respond to the offer letter email? Call the partner?

Always negotiate more but be polite and respectful

A true counter offer is gutsy move because - as you learned in law school - a counter offer is a rejection of the firm's offer. They may just accept your rejection and move on (yes, I have seen this). Instead, consider asking if the comp could be increased since a question is not a counter offer and does not vitiate their offer.

How does one tell their boss (owner of the company) that you are burnt out? The sheer volume of work is exhausting and I haven’t taken a true vacation as we are a small company so if something urgent comes to my email I feel like I must respond. I was given an additional title and more responsibilities last year as well but only a 3% raise for it.

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?

I have an offer for $130k for a senior attorney position in a boutique L&E firm. Also have a recruiter who thinks she can get me into another for $150-170k. Both are more than I’ve ever made (Denver, 17 yrs of experience but completely different practice areas). Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer? I’ve never been in a position to bargain my starting salary so this is all very new to me.
