I have 4 leveled groups. I meet with each group 2x a week. For my small group instruction, I use leveled readers (I utilize www.readinga-z.com for this since our district doesn’t have any). Usually what I do in small group coincides with what skills I’m teaching large group. Every 10 weeks, I change the groups a bit based on academic testing performance and what I observe. In small group, I take notes each time a child reads, and we make goals together for the upcoming 10 weeks (whether they want to work on fluency, decoding, comprehension, voice, etc). If they aren’t in small group, they’re doing Accellerated Reading, Readworks, or Lexia. My kids thrive on routine and they do a really great job!
I do the Daily 5 which has really helped make reading rotations super flexible. I end up meeting with different groups each day depending on which skill or strategy they need to work on. It’s been great because the groups are typically heterogeneous as far as reading level so no one ever feels like they are in the “low” group
We have an "all hands on deck" approach. Each class has 4 (or more) teachers teaching reading groups at the same time for 30 minutes. The classroom teacher, a reading teacher, an ELL teacher, and a para-pro each teach a group based on reading levels. It seems to be more effective in the lower grades than the upper grades.
The groups may change throughout based on needs.
Groups are made based on data. I assess every 5 weeks to see if changes need to be made for groupings.
