I work at a dual language school. Labeling items with word and pictures is helpful. Also, learning simple words in their native language and using them makes them feel more comfortable. Use hand gestures when you can. When reading and working with grammar give them the basics they will probably need instruction in the alphabet since letter sounds are different. You’ll also be surprised at how quickly they begin to pick things up in time with full immersion into the English language. Remember be patient it can be scary and stressful for them.
Do you have any other students at your school who are bilingual in the newcomers language? That has been a lifesaver for me! They help translate the directions and check in for me about how the student is feeling...Also do any of the curriculum programs you use have a version in their language that’s available at your school? Most of my newcomers are Spanish speaking and there is a Spanish version of the math and science curriculum. Good luck!
Keep things routine, as it helps them to make connections to some of the new language. Google translate is another useful tool if they can read in their first language. I’ve started with the basics with my new students (sight words, pattern books, etc) and you celebrate the small victories so they feel the improvement happening (especially because they want to be able to learn the language as quickly as possible)
