How do you evaluate if suing someone would be worth it? i.e. can you actually collect

I have a contractor that has done limited work, the work he’s done has made things worse, and he has deposits that he won’t return.

$8K in deposits, $12K in rework quoted from another contractor, $3K in delay credits mentioned in contract.

Contact your state’s licensing board for contractors. Assuming he actually has a license and the appropriate insurance, you can file a complaint based on the terms of your contract and potentially get reimbursed via his professional liability insurance, without having to go through the courts.

Do you have legal benefits via work? They will cover the charges for lawyer for this. I had a contractor sue me and it was covered

The property is under my LLC and thus I believe it doesn’t qualify

What state?

Missouri

I think most states allow under $10k in small claims court. It’s fairly easy in the states I’m familiar with. If it is a contractor, you have a better chance of getting reimbursed but you need to make sure you have all your ducks in a row. If you have a contract with them, read it carefully, you may have to go through a mediation or something else.

I think it’s worth it.

U can small claims for [10k] or actually sue for 25k+ but you'd need a lawyer will take 30-40% putting you at like 15k.

Is this just /a guy/ or a real llc?

You're probably SOL but you can contact a lawyer or two for a free consultation and see what they say-- it may be worth that route b/c they'll help you actually get the $

I’d like some independent views please, on a financial decision my wife and I are about to make. We’re looking to buy our first/dream home and the property is valued at $1.25m. We have savings of $250k and our HHI is c$350k, with no debt. We will probably exhaust our savings on the deposit and closing costs. A $1m with mortgage at 6% with property taxes is c$8k/month. We net about $14k, we think it’s just about manageable, however keen to get your views please? More context in comment below.

Question for folks with second homes: Considering buying a vacation home but would be primarily for family use. We currently have a primary residence with a mortgage balance of ~640K, so my understanding is I could only deduct the mortgage interest on 110K of the second mortgage to stay under the 750K cap. If I were to buy the second home through an LLC, would that allow me to exceed that 750K since the expenses of the second home would be pass through expenses/income?

5. Have another business generating revenue to offset this.
