How do you like to decompress over the weekend? Applying and interviewing after a layoff can feel like a full-time job in itself, so it's important to remember to take some space from it all when you get the chance.

Job searching really is more exhausting than having a job. I typically unplug by getting outside for a hike, baking sourdough and meal prepping, and catching up on tv shows. Anything that gives my brain a break! How about you?

smart

That all sounds amazing (especially the sourdough)! I love doing some reading, some cooking/baking, and spending some time at the park with my dogs.

I try to spend my weekends doing things far removed from the job search, or work related things in general. I try to avoid computers and screens as much as I can. There's something to be said for reading books, like real old school paper books. One thing I'd like to do this year is get back my attention span, and putting time aside to read is a major part of that.

smart

YES totally agree with this. I love a traditional "analog" book as well. I had stopped for a while and had to build my attention span back up as well, I found graphic novels worked really well as my "training wheels" to get back into the swing of reading.

Gardening is great - working outside, physical labor, cultivating and growing beautiful plants to enjoy during the week. Detoxing from tech.

Gardening is a good one! Getting your hands dirty like that is such a nice break from tech

Additional Posts in Laid Off in Tech Support Group

The severance package at Meta for laid off employees almost makes it nice to be laid off depending on what your personal situation is….. personally wouldn’t mind getting 4+ months of full pay to reset and think about what’s next 😬

Hi everyone. I was a solution engineer at Oracle. I graduated from college in May and this was my first job out of college so the lay offs were pretty rough. I majored in Supply chain management and I have 2 internships under my belt. Do you guys have any advice or tips on what to do moving forward? I would like to stay in tech and I’m giving it a few weeks before I start pivoting to more traditional supply chain roles. Thanks.

After 6 years of temporary contracts and unstable situations, I find my dream job in my dream company. All of a sudden the world goes upside down and I get laid off. I start sending hundreds of applications, with only 2 recruiters getting back to me to say I don’t have experience for the job (this is how it works in Italy). Add a terrible health situation in my family and it seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Ugh. 😞

Follow up post to my last post…My husband was laid off from the company where I also work. I am feeling really isolated / depressed about working and moving forward. I’m also getting to a stage where I’m really sad that people haven’t reached out to either my husband or myself to send well wishes or provide support. It’s like they don’t know what to say or I make them feel awkward so they don’t bother…I’m trying to focus on a few that have been supportive but it’s hard…Any words of advice? 😞

Hey team! So I was laid off from my SDR position about a week ago. A couple months back, I had an offer for a BDR position that I ended up turning down but I really liked and connected with the manager. Is it worth it to reach out? I applied to other positions in the same company. What about reaching out to previous co workers at a different company? Not sure how to navigate this… please help. Also I’m sorry if this is the wrong bowl to post in.

Was laid off in Sept. Unfortunately we will be seeing many more coming. It's what happens in a recession. Unfortunately I now also have my age against me. Not in a mentally good place at the moment.

6 months pregnant and just laid off. And 40% of my severance was just taken in taxes .. I just spoke with paid family leave and I no longer qualify even though I had been paying into the program (thanks NY).. I already applied for unemployment but doctors are telling me I’ve got 10-14 weeks left in this pregnancy.. so stressed having twins and being unemployed, no maternity leave, no paychecks coming in, and I’ve been applying but not a single interview.. just ugh. 😭

I’ve been lay off this afternoon because low performance, it just two weeks ago I talked to my manager and told her that she’s micromanaging me a lot and I need more autonomy at my work. I didn’t like what they’ve done to me specially I’ve been redundant from the previous role before joining this company. I cannot sleep please any plan’ action and what to answer for the reason why you leave your company? I’ve been in 3 jobs for the last 2 years.
