You don’t but you can check out reviews on Glassdoor and Indeed.
I’ve also contacted existing and past employees on LinkedIn and was most surprised at how forthcoming they were with information.
You won't really know, unfortunately, until you actually start working there
You don’t. And your individual experience will be different than any review or anecdote so there’s only so much faith you can put in those.
I agree. And that leaves me flying in the dark. Would I just quit if I don’t like it? Is that damaging to one’s reputation? How much?
I like the idea of contacting previous employees…if I can find the predecessor…and they won’t tell the employer.
I reach out to former employees on LinkedIn. I’ve gotten very useful feedback!
ask good questions during the interview. I like the question "where do people go for lunch" good gauge of comradery. ask what kind of desks and areas people work at. ask when's the first happy hour! keep in mind I'm a power interviewer and I usually supercharge the discussion by having way more questions than they expected, but regardless, I just went through the process of intentionally changing jobs over the last year and gained a very good insight into what I want. maybe that's what you need to figure out first - what do you like and what do you not like. then formulate the strategy to read the place from the interview.
