You should def go. They will notice if you are not there and they will think you don’t want to be a part of the team.
As a compromise, you can go early and just stay for one hour, saying you have to catch the train or some other reasonable-sounding excuse. This approach avoids any drunkenness and also gives you time to snag some food :)
Holiday parties are notorious for inappropriate behavior, so I don’t blame you for wanting to avoid them.
If you work in big law there will be so many people there that no one will notice if you don’t attend. If you’re at a small or midsize law firm your absence will be much more noticeable and you should at least make an appearance.
Agreed - if your office is large, there are bound to be people who don't make it, and nobody will care. If it's a small shop, probably best to show up for at least a little bit.
Go. It cannot be more than two or three hours. People notice when others are not there.
As someone new to the team, I would try to at least make an appearance. You don't have to stay for the whole thing, but making the effort to show up for an hour or so goes a long way unless you have a compelling reason not to go (family obligations, traveling out of town, etc.).
You should go, that’s your time to network and get to know everyone.
I once started a job as a financial analyst on the day of the Company Christmas party. It was fine. I stayed for a few hours (it was basically an all day affair).
You should go. Make yourself known by saying hi to a bunch of people. Most of them will probably eventually be too drunk for them to remember when you left.
For my firm it would be a major faux pas
It’s important to go and I guarantee you will feel better after. Great way to get comfortable at work in a more relaxed environment
**Update**
I didn’t go, nobody cared! LOL thanks for the input everyone!
Exactly.
Show your face, especially if you’re new. You don’t have to stay the whole time, but it will be noticed that you aren’t there, and as others have said, this ca. be looked at as not being a team player (stupid, i know, but unfortunate reality). Grin and bare it; play the game; temper your drinking; and then go home and actually enjoy your night.
It’s government!
Nooooobody will care, skip away!
You have to go. very awkward if you don’t and yes they’ll take it personally.
You should definitely go. It can connect you with colleagues and help strengthen any work place relationships. You can speak about personal achievements or the stresses of your work. It's a great chance to network and make you more visible.
Make an appearance. Networking is never a bad thing.
Is it close by? If not too far, you should go. Mine was a 2 hr drive going, 2 hr drive back. Didnt end up going because it was too far.
