I’m about to start an internship at IBM for UX Research. I’m super excited about it, and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the design culture there or how the company is for designers? Better WLB, slower career progression but still some upward mobility and very decent pay for the hours. Biggest con is a stack ranking performance management system, which means you need to consistently outperform your peers or be worried about job security.
People are generally nice and fun to work with imo. Everything else is more or less the same as any other industry position. Culture is team dependent, but for the most part good
I agree with CO2. That’s been my experience. However, I will say I’ve heard the performance management culture does become slightly more “up or out” at the senior levels (Sr Director+). I’ve seen several people pushed out at that level because they weren’t going to be promoted after several years and were seen as blockers for others below them
