Q4 is a tough time to get first years involved. You’ll slowly start getting more and more work but probably won’t be steady/busy until Q1

Even Q2, things are slow at the beginning of the year for 1-2months IMO, and as a first year your first few months Oct-Jan will be slow because the more senior associates are trying to make up their hours for the bonus. Enjoy this time!

I'm a 2021 grad, started working October 2021. I didn't get to full capacity until about 6 months in. I went from billing 30-50hrs/month for my first few months to 150-175/month by July.
I know it's stressful, but try to enjoy your time right now, including your evenings and weekends. You'll be busy soon enough.
Edit: I do securities and m&a
This is very helpful since I got hired in m&a and private equity.
Thanks for sharing the experiences - sounds crazy to worry about not working

It takes a lot of time to get a new associate looped in. Basically, you don’t know anything, so if I’m busy I have to fit you into random pockets of time where I have some thing that needs to be done and also have time to explain it to you and review your work. If I’m not busy, I might actually hoard work for myself. You kind of slowly learn how things work and get more useful over the first few months, and then you really start getting looped into various things on a more serious level, also people start trusting you more over time.
Relaxing, spending time with your loved ones (seriously, do this), online dating, getting into a good workout routine, learning how to cook…basically, you really only need to work when you actually have work. You may ask how this will benefit your career and the answer is that it will keep you from burning out if you learn now how to really lean into the slow times. Obviously, you should be available and looking for work, but you really don’t need to burn yourself out trying to work 50 hours a week when there just isn’t 50 hours a week worth of work to do
