I would remind them that you'll be in a position to give input on whether the firm continues to get work from the company, and if they back out on an agreement you had, you won't be able to recommend them anymore. But don't burn bridges over a few grand.
Yeah, I would be mad and fight that. If your going to leave anyways and the GC negotiated the deal, then go straight mafia on them. Tell your GC you want to have a call with the firm about a deal s/he made with them. Get them on the phone (with GC) and ask them about it live. Then, sit back, and watch how they work. Don’t be scared, go right at them and let them know your not the “one” to @$& with.
People will disagree with this tactic, but I always favor putting people in “live” difficult decisions. People are always thugs on emails and fairies in person or on the phone.
Fight it, hard. Make a stink.
I think you should be mad. I also just find that extremely strange that the firm is going to potentially anger a client over a roughly 10k bonus (not sure what the number is) when the GC negotiated that. It sounds like you’re leaving, but to me the behavior sounds like a bad sign re: the firm, on a number of levels.
When I had an employer try to back out on a promise made during employment negotiations, I told them they were free to decide whether they were a firm that upholds their agreements or not, and then I would be free to decide how to react to their decision. I got the missing pay. Not exactly a threat, but kind of.
