I’m going into my 7th year and someday want to be a manager with multiple reports. But I want to be a GC someday. I’m 32 so still relatively junior but figure in my 40’s I want to be ready to lead a team.

If you want to advance beyond 4-500k tc you will have to become a manager.
On the flip side, there are many more IC roles available than manager roles.
5th year IC here at around 415k TC. Would like to manage at some point, but only because I think I would be good at it. I’d also expect a significant TC increase
Salaries are high in the Bay, and a large chunk of my TC is equity, which doesn’t make its way onto job postings

It depends. What is the scope of your roles now?

Like youre the "exec comp" or "securities" or "m&a" senior counsel as opposed to someone managing 2-4 of those lawyers
I’m a line attorney with around 330k TC. Long term I would like to move into management for a few years, get experience managing a team, pay off all my loans and save some money, and then pivot. I work remotely from a small town, and would love to open (or purchase) a title company here and practice as much (or little) law on the side as I want to. Business ownership is the true path to wealth in the US.
I would probably try to go managing level close enough to retirement if it was a smaller team and a good company. I think it’s a natural evolution if then I feel like I could be a good manager. But I wouldn’t want to be GC and my post-retirement plan is to teach at a local college/law school, so I’m not super money-hungry either (but I’m privileged and have no loans, and a high earner spouse, so def had and have a leg up)
