How much of a pay cut would you entertain to stay WFH, or work at an office 15 minutes away from your house? I moved companies during COVID, was told verbally my position would be remote, now starting to get pressure to go in the office and have a feeling it’s going to be mandatory multiple days a week, it’s a 50 minute commute. My prior company wants me back, is local and I really enjoyed working there. I don’t know how much they’d offer but I know they can’t match my bonus.

This is exactly what is going to happen to the majority of positions that people fled to thinking they would be full time remote only to find that perk is no longer being upheld. The majority of the work force need to come to terms that most industries will be back in the office part of full time. Wfh will be a carrot they dangle only to eliminate it. Taking a pay cut to stay at home is crazy. You will be forgotten and never advance over someone in the office. I say go back to your local firm, go into their office and get them to match.

likehelpful

LM1, true. They just need to be truthful. Noone is buying productivity and collaboration as reason to return when that's been happening just fine.

like

Calculate gas and car maintenance, food for lunch, and any other additional costs that working in the office would bring and see how much it is per week. Times that by 52 weeks a year and subtract it from how much you make at the current place. You'll have your answer as to home much you can go down and have peace of mind.

WFH is worth a LOT to us. I'd take a pay cut up to 20% to keep it.

like

Stop saying that out loud before these b******s get any ideas...WFM is my number 1 concern

like

It depends on how much you’re making because after a certain point extra money doesn’t impact your life that much but below a certain threshold it may.

like

Very true, happened to me, the extra money was not really that big of an impactful difference

like

Don’t assume they can’t match your bonus. Ask and see what happens.

like

If they’ve already told you they can’t match, how close can they get.

I’d take a 10k cut to wfh permanently

like

I’d take a 15% cut to stay WFH. My commute is a touch over an hour each way.

like

Yeah, you wouldn't even feel it at that point, it's the same price and less taxes. lol

like

Consider the amount you would save in fuel costs/car expenses, clothing, lunches, etc. I would definitely take a pay cut to work at homeI would try to balance it out though with the amount I’m saving by working at home.

like

This is exactly my point as well. You aren't really losing anything with a pay cut.

like

My opinion: I’m a former insurance employee of 5 years. Work life balance and career fulfillment to me are the most important assets a company can offer. What if you get paid more but your life is absolutely miserable. Unless you are truly passionate about what you do, to an extent, this outweighs those few extra thousand. Also there are really easy ways out there to make those extra thousands back!

like

100% agree with this. We work to live, not live to work.

like

You're fortunate to have the option to work from home. I wouldn't hesitate to grab the opportunity. Money isn't everything. I prefer the peace of working from home.

like

I am pondering this as well. Currently considering going to another company, in office for more money. How much is enough to give up wfh?

like

I wouldn’t go in office for under 20k raise

Pay cuts are tough. However, unless a company is fully remote with no office close to you just assume you’re coming into the office at some point.

like

I wouldn't at this point. I took a paycut a while back that didn't seem like much but with inflation and a few unexpected things come up , I started to feel it pretty quickly.

I wouldn't take more money over a long commute or over a culture I thought suited me but if everything else is equal, I would not take a paycut to work from home.

I often see people say just a few thousand dollars doesnt matter but when you already don't make much, yes, it does matter, you do notice. I simply couldn't afford a pay cut of any kind.

like

I was considering leaving my WFH job that was paying below market for a higher paying job where I’d be commuting 50 min there and back. I was trying to weigh the pros and cons and then realized I could have both. I expanded my search to companies that weren’t local and found that there are remote roles out there that will pay you better!

like

I mean.. if they want you back, but can you let them know what you’re currently working with, including bonus and see if they’ll match? Or maybe ask for a little more salary wise and accept a lesser bonus to even it out?

like

Could even ask for other things that they might be able to do - restore your seniority for things like PTO, etc.

like

I would only take a pay cut it if I sign a contract with my employer that guarantees me working from home for the life of my employment, otherwise they can always pull you back into the office and then your left with less money AND a commute 5 days a week.

like

I would take 10-15% cut to stay at home.

like

i dont know a lot to consider there but i would do a cost analysis.

like

Adding: I make a minimum of $30K more than I did at my prior, with my bonus last year I made $50K more. I fit in with both cultures. Majority of benefits are nearly the identical. Bonuses at my current are large while at my prior were 5K typically. I am fine going into an office sometimes, I just don’t want to drive THAT far. I haven’t entertained the conversations from my prior seriously because they’ve said it they can’t pay me that much for my experience but wish they could- HO denied the amount. Probably could afford life either way, I was single when I left paying all the bills making less, now married sharing bills living very comfortably. I probably would hit a cap at my old co, and at my new I’ve already gotten raises. Money vs happiness at its finest.

like

If you plan on having kids I’d choose happiness if you would still be financially secure. You can’t put a price on flexibility when you have kids.

None unfortunately I am already underpaid so a pay cut would not be good logic.
