Could be a unpopular opinion but your education, for example the MBA, only holds as much value as the hiring manager gives it.
I’ve known some managers who never went to school whatsoever, no bachelors no masters and subsequently they don’t care about higher education. If someone came in with a PhD it Probobly wouldn’t even sway them
Whereas if the manager did get an MBA himself then he may look more preferably to candidates who also got an MBA
It’s all about perception and personal opinion unfortunately
Yes, low. At my last company where I was a people manager my senior BI analysts made over 100k base. MCOL in the financial services industry.
Not gonna lie I always though the B.I guy was just someone you email being like hey can I get a report of XYZ and they just send you an excel document
I had no idea there was actual “coding” involved, I thought it was a dude setting up a bunch of filters and columns in excel with an export lol
Yeah that pretty much sums up my day to day 😅 granted we are just getting into incorporating python with prep for some predictive analysis.
I only know excel and make $120. You’re being lowballed to death
Yes, with your skills, I would say that's pretty low.
I've got 15 YOE, but only the last 5 are BI/data analytics related -- career pivot from legal assistant (40k) to corporate data analyst (60k), then bi dev in nonprofit (70k) with a W3Schools SQL cert, before moving to B2B SaaS and breaking 100.

For a MCOL? Or HCOL? And in tech or finance? In finance that is very low but BI titles generally don’t pay very well either. With your experience in analytics and tools you should ideally be around $100-140TC in a MCOL city in banking. In tech it may be more
Currently we write the script to pull in the data as well as clean it up, develop the dashboards and do validation etc. We don’t have the necessary access to do our own ETLs but hopefully that will change soon. I’ve been asked to incorporate ML since I’m the only one on the team that has a decent knowledge of python so I’ve definitely been leaning into more of a data science role lately.
MCOL here and you should be making 100
So BI is a lower paying job?
It depends on your location (State, remote/local), and also the years of experience. Try to negotiate after you have been offered a position with many counter offers from the other companies.
Probably, I have no experience and I’ll be making 83k when I start. BBA in computer info systems and I start my first job in January (technology analyst)
How you are compensated is a blend of your company (maturity, size, field), location, experience, and education. Since you only provide your experience and credentials, I will speak to these.
Three years of working experience is still considered fairly junior in the Data Science and Business Analytics world. Additionally, based on some of your replies here in this chain, you are just beginning to break into machine learning.
Like one of the commenters here have already pointed out, the reality is that MBAs are not often considered a degree that may warrant an increase in pay in the Data Science field though it may pay off as you progress in in your career development when you you transition from an IC to a manager.
Business analysts do tend to rise in through the title ranks more rapidly, but are often compensated with less pay compared to their Data Science peers who often hold Masters or PhDs in highly quantitative and technical fields and often focus on machine learning problems. Perhaps as you continue to build more expertise and experience in machine learning, you can begin to expect compensation increases.
