Not much I believe. 6-12 month is actually a good window to get used to the firm and build network. You'll need support to make AP and if you come in as an EM, you might be under pressure to do that asap. Fwiw, I'll also suggest considering industry if you're not committed to consulting and making partner.
I fully understand the motivation behind having laterals spend 6-12 months getting used to the firm’s approach. I would just prefer to do that at Manager level to begin with if the option is there.
Keen to hear more about why you think I shouldn’t bother if I’m not committed to making Partner. I would have thought MBB for 3-4 years at Manager level provides plenty of optionality.

Everyone I know who lateraled to McK as an EM or AP was ask to play the associate role on their first project to learnt the rhythm of the work. Depending on the length of that project you might be playing the role of an individual contributor 2-3m.
I would personally push for EM title as a lateral. You get the opportunity to ramp up at the higher comp. I don't know that the lost comp is worth the extra couple of months to ramp.
D1 - Thanks. McK were very quick to push me down the Associate path whereas Bain and BCG have withheld being explicit. Will keep cracking at it and see how it plays out.
Am also interviewing for an AP role at another boutique which I’ll need to factor in as an option too. It’s a bloody heated market right now… good time to be a consultant.
