How much snowfall does it take for your district to cancel school?

Well,…… it depends. Lots of dirt roads in my county that get pretty slick with 2 inches and the right temp. And I’ve seen 6 inches and school is open, depending on timing and road clearing. And in reality, that target is less in the early winter and greater later when we are close to our limit of days off.

like

Ha In Texas it just has to be in the forecast…

funny

I was hoping to have a snow day meaning one more day off from work but today I have to go back to work and yes we are open

Our district is very large and some of it is rural. The bus drivers decide aby 5:30 am if the mountain roads are safe and if not, the district calls it. Some areas don't have any snow or ice but the rural areas are affected by winter weather and the whole district is shut down.

Anything that sticks

Quite a bit! I think our superintendent gets up crazy early to check road reports, talk to other superintendents, and check the conditions. I’m in a rural area so I don’t think we have like a specific inches number - it more depends on the road conditions. I’ve had a snow day for only 4 inches because it all froze over and I’ve driven into school while actively getting over a foot lol!

About a foot

like

Usually around 2-4 ft, but more often than not, freezing temperatures play a bigger part in determining a day off. If the buses' diesel engine fuel gels, no school.

One area gets snow that sticks…I’m guessing 1/8 inch.

The concept of snow makes the district I teach in panic and close.

funny

Very little!

You must be on the west side!

Less than yours, I bet 🤣 I experienced Northern Michigan Winters growing up. A foot of snow might get us a 2-hour delay.

Down here, it depends a lot on timing and what kind of snow. 3 or 4 inches over night can easily get us to stay home, especially if any ice accumulates. We don't have the ability to deal with it quickly.

The same snow during the day will usually be fine by the next morning after the trucks get out.

It varies.

Apparently about 1.5 inches between the hours of 3 am and 6 am.

A lot! We are used to snow here in Pa. If it’s in the forecast and less than three or four inches, I know we will not be canceled. If it’s 5+ we could be delayed or canceled if it comes during morning rush. Believe it or not, my district is still a walking district. We only have two buses for field trips. Our district is huge. We have a high school with over 5k students. Two middle schools that serve about 800 kids each, and 6 elementary schools. There is an ordinance that people must shovel the sidewalks. With all that said, most parents drive there kids to school and then have them walk home. Some kids walk more than a mile.

No snow days in Utah. We might get a delayed start, but we go to school regardless of weather

That sucks. I've heard of snow accumulated to ad high as a home's roof yet no closures of any businesses.

Where I grew up, it took 3 feet to close our high school. That was thr famous storm of 1993 on the east coast. Other than that my high school was open even when it was currently snowing but would close early due to snowfall. Does this make any kind of sense? When I was driving, my mom wouldn't let me go. Even when a hurricane hit, she made me stay home (I didn't mind another day off ;) )

Depends not only depend on the snowfall footage, it also depends on wind and temp. There have been yrs when we were off bc of polar vortex which is more about how frigid it is even though there is no or little actual snow. We don’t have e-learning and our make up days, if any are always waived.

The forecast of snow cancels school in South Texas.
😎

last time we canceled for snow it was 4 ft. We usually cancel for ice though.

If you follow the cryptocurrency market, or even have been just taking an interest lately, with the Bitcoin "halvening," you should check out Pi.

If you haven't heard of Pi, it's a new cryptocurrency (like Bitcoin), developed by a bunch of Stanford PhDs. What makes it really interesting is that you can still mine this coin, using just the processing power of your phone, unlike just about every other coin out there. (Contd)
