How much would you charge a small restaurant franchise to review their training and policies for employees on certain issues like sexual harassment training, snow and ice removal policies, data security policies, etc. for each subject?

Charge based on your experience. If your hourly rate is $300/hour, and it’s going to take two hours to review and revise, charge $600.

If I need the business and they will come to me for other stuff, $350/hr. If it’s annoying and I’ll never hear from them again and I’m busy, $500/hr (standard rate), but I probably wouldn’t want to even deal with it for less than $1,000 total, for me, right now. Honestly that sounds like hundreds of pages of policy and if they’re asking it’s probably poorly written and bastardized over many years. Every time someone gives me a handbook or policy manual to review, it’s a major project. If they just want me to look at it and tell them how good/bad it is, $500.

I had a company with a 200 page handbook ask me to rework the PTO and Leave policies and that alone took maybe 10 hours, multiple meetings, etc. Lots of variables. I’ve built handbooks in house and it’s always a serious lift.

With the various RTO rumors/fear out there and in the absence of spring/summer/fall(?) bonuses. Would you consider coming into the office more if your firm offered bonuses linked to days in the office (coupled with billable targets, of course)?

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

3 attorney firm. I’ve been here for 6 years and have used Westlaw exclusively. Now we are switching to Lexis because apparently Westlaw is too expensive. I hate change. I know where everything is on Westlaw and now I need to relearn. Apparently Westlaw will not budge on price and would rather just see a client leave than work with them. Super annoying. Any insight on negotiating Westlaw or transitioning to lexis?

Advice for Of Counsel roles? I am of counsel at a firm where I can set my own rate and keep a percentage of collections, which varies slightly depending on whether the client is one I generated or not. I’m finding that a lot of my work is for firm clients where the lawyer negotiated a flat fee (and the hours worked are less, due to efficiency etc).
